JAZZ HARMONY/THEORY BOOKS

Through the years I’ve found that my greatest understanding of jazz harmony and theory has come from trial and error as well as the analysis of the great masters’ works. When investigating textbooks or primers on the subject, I have found two that I recommend to scholars wanting to shorten their learning curve on the subject. Marc Sabatella, a Colorado pianist, has a fantastic online resource entitled: “A Jazz Improvisation Primer”. More recently, I have been introduced to a new resource by David Berkman entitled: “The Jazz Harmony Book”.  Both are excellent and and great resources to aid in unraveling some of the mysteries.   Use those with huge amounts of trial and error, before long you’ll be ‘Miles Ahead’.  🙂
